World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading
Upgrades can boost the value of weapons, armors and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as Crit chance and damage from PvE.
If the template for upgrading a weapon is in %, the weapon will increase 3percent of its previous attack damage every time it's upgraded.
The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item's level. The cost increases as the item level increases.
Components
Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into weapons, armor, and trinkets to give a stat bonus or extra impact while they're being used. They can be obtained by crafting, buying from vendors, trading or looting. Certain upgrades also come with special cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components can only be used on equipment with a slot. The item must be at least upgraded to blue before a component can be used. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used one time; they can't be used multiple times or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and Enrichments are kind of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascended equipment, as well as some non-ascended items. Infusions and enrichments can be retrieved by salvaging gear that is ascended or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

Each level requires a different number of components and the cost of upgrading increase as the item gets advanced in level.
Certain upgrades require a certain ingredient to activate. This ingredient can be obtained by finishing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes are available in the upgrade tab of a crafting table or bought from NPCs. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed earns some Technology Points. These points can be used to the upgrading of an item. When enough points have been earned you will be eligible to claim the upgrade and also receive the bonuses.
When an item is upgraded by a player it is replaced with a different item of the same type. This means that the same armor piece will get a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item also comes with its own set bonus. This could be a problem, as it can cause the item to become more expensive, even if you don't need it.
Upgrades to items can be rerolled if the player has enough reroll tokens in order to do this. This will cause the item to be exchanged for a new one, with a level 1 base and a totally different set of bonuses. This is a good idea however it should not be used frequently as it can be a waste of resources.
Certain upgrades can boost their value and allow players to personalize their gear. An excellent example is Dolphin's Gift, which gives a buff when the player is repeatedly in and out of the water (or swims like a dolphin). However, the user can still continue to use the weapon or armor after the failure.
If an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from lowest to highest. This means that, if a weapon gains an increase in the chance of crit, the increase is applied before any increase in attack damage. A new attribute called Slots is now added to the item's definition and the value is recomputed every time an upgrade is made.
The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is based on the rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading non-premium equipment is equivalent to its base value. Premium items could require different upgrades than standard gear. For instance, they may need fewer sowels, but more minerals and orons.
